How long do cast iron drain lines last?
Cast iron drain and sewer piping was standard in homes built before roughly 1975. It generally lasts somewhere in the range of 50 to 75 years, and it fails from the inside out — the bottom of the pipe corrodes and scales while the outside still looks solid. That's the important part for a buyer: a visual inspection has real limits here. The only way to know the actual condition of a cast iron line is to run a camera through it, which is a separate service from a standard home inspection.

What it actually is
Heavy iron pipe used for drains and sewer lines for most of the twentieth century. Durable, but not permanent — and its failure mode is invisible from the outside.
Why it matters in East Texas
Plenty of older homes around Tyler and the surrounding towns are on original cast iron, and many of them are now at or past that age range. Add mature trees looking for water and you have the two ingredients for a sewer line problem.
What I do when I find one
I note the drain material where it's visible, run water and watch how the system drains, and look for slow drains or backup evidence. What I can't do in a visual inspection is see inside the pipe, and I'm direct about that limitation in the report rather than leaving an impression of coverage I didn't provide.
What it means for you
On an older home with cast iron, a sewer scope by a plumber is worth serious consideration during your option period. It's one of the few finds that can run into five figures, and it's not something you want to discover after closing.
