How much foundation movement is normal in East Texas?
Some movement is normal here, and a house with zero evidence of it would be more surprising than one with a little. Our soil carries a high clay content that swells when it's wet and shrinks when it's dry, so both slab and pier-and-beam homes move with the seasons. Movement stops being routine when it's uneven across the house, when it's getting worse year over year, or when it shows up alongside separating brick, sticking doors, or floors that visibly slope. The single biggest factor a homeowner actually controls is keeping moisture around the foundation consistent.

What it actually is
The house isn't sinking so much as riding on ground that changes volume with the weather. Even movement across a whole slab causes far less trouble than one corner moving while the rest stays put.
Why it matters in East Texas
This is the East Texas homeownership lesson. The drought years are harder on foundations than the wet ones, because the soil pulls away from the perimeter and the edges drop. Then it rains for three weeks and everything heaves back. Houses here live on a moving surface.
What I do when I find one
I look at the whole story rather than a single crack: door and window operation, brick veneer, floor level by feel and by eye, and the drainage around the outside. Drainage is where a lot of "foundation problems" actually start.
What it means for you
Consistent watering during drought is the cheapest foundation maintenance there is, and it's the thing most new homeowners here have never been told. Working gutters that dump water away from the house is the other half.
