What are soffit and fascia on a house?
The fascia is the vertical board running along the edge of the roof, usually where the gutters attach. The soffit is the panel underneath, closing the gap between that board and the wall. Together they finish the roof edge, and when the soffit is vented, they supply the intake air the attic needs. They're also where rot tends to show up first, because they take the water whenever gutters overflow or a roof edge sheds badly.

What it actually is
The trim that closes off the roof edge. Easy to overlook from the ground and easy to read once you know what you're looking at.
Why it matters in East Texas
Rotted fascia behind a gutter is one of the more common exterior findings I write, and it's almost always a gutter that's been full for a couple of seasons. Clean gutters are cheap; replacing fascia and soffit is not.
What I do when I find one
I look at the condition of both around the whole house, check whether soffit venting is present and whether it's blocked, and probe suspect areas where I can safely reach them.
What it means for you
This is usually maintenance rather than catastrophe, but it's maintenance that gets expensive if it's deferred long enough to reach the framing behind it.
